There are a numerous advantages around having a virtual social support network. I believe it helps lessen the stress of isolation and creates a sense of belonging. Having a virtual social support network also creates the feeling that somebody from your network is looking out for you and will miss your presence if you are not there. Is is that “somebody” from the support group who remembers your birthday when others don’t. A Virtual Social support network has the potential to create connection and can build lasting relationships. It allows people who were once remote acquaintances to become your life long friends.

What exactly is a social support network made up of ? and what does a virtual social support network look like in theory? In my opinion, your social support network can be whatever you want it to be. It could be a friend you regularly talk to on the phone once a week or a mate you regularly keep in touch with via whats-app, or a group of people you connect with regularly on an online facebook forum around a shared interest or an online faith-based service. Your support network could even be just your close family or group of friends within your support bubble. Choose what you want your support network to be and what works for you whilst adhering to the latest Covid government guidelines around support bubbles.

My view is that global pandemic has changed the way we connect with others. We are seeing the emergence of technological giants such as Facebook, Instagram upscaling their technological functionalities to bring communities closer today.

If there is one thing that I am thankful for, it is Zoom or equivalent tools like it. With faith based organizations being closed down in early stages of the pandemic, Zoom allowed many churches for examples to hold services online and share messages of hope and inspiration. It has been reported from online statistics that the church attendance (and other faith based organisation I am sure) has increased virtually as individuals seek connection and answers.

Plug yourself into a support network (whether online or in person support bubble in line with government Covid guidelines) for regular strength and encouragement. Having a social support network is one of the proven key factors for strengthening our emotional resilience.

Don’t wide out the wave of this global pandemic isolated and alone. Take action, find your support network, create one or plug into one.

“By yourself you’re unprotected. With a friend you can face the worst. Can you round up a third? A three-stranded rope isn’t easily snapped” Ecclesiastes 4: 12
