Where is our ‘inner critic’ coming from?

Do you still feel plagued today as an adult by the negative words spoken over your life from childhood? Do you sense that other people’s criticism of you is subconsciously holding you back from fulfilling your potential? Do you still battle daily with thoughts of accusations that were previously hurled at you by other people who are no longer in your life? Do you feel this crisis of confidence is causing a wedge between your relationships, forcing you to retreat and withdraw from others and not get too close for fear of being hurt? Your self-confidence has been knocked out of you by life. You may be walking around feeling battle-weary, insignificant, unworthy and inferior.

I recall singing at school as a child, the following words “stick and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me”. I wish I knew then; what I know now is that words are in the form of doubt, criticism or any negative statement, can be destructive, wounding and damaging to one’s self-esteem and sense of self-worth. In my opinion, I believe that negative words can be equated to a punch in the face. The only difference is that you don’t see the internal wound and bleeding, but the effects of a punch in the face and derogatory criticism are still the same. Both can send us reeling. Do you see how the impact of a physical punch and criticism are so similar?

Imagine you are flat out on the floor from a physical punch. Imagine again that you are broken-hearted from a negative word hurled your way. Imagine that I am beside you. Will you take my hand, friend, for me to slowly help you up? In the upcoming blogs, allow me to help you slowly get up on your feet again as we build the foundation of your self-worth together so that you can fly strong through life just like an eagle.
