Wellbeing for Men — Finding your Safe Place

Where do you go when you feel exhausted and stressed? Who or What do you turn to when you are depressed? It is so key when you are feeling tired and run down that you are in a position of safety. You may turn to alcohol or you may turn to drugs for some relief from your problems — however, drugs and alcohol are not the solutions. You may end up feeling worse or more guilty. You may even self-destruct, dare I say.

Finding your unique safe pace is key to your wellbeing. What do I mean by finding your ‘safe place’? What does a ‘safe place’ look like? Your safe place can be anything you want it to be. It may be a bench in a park to have some quiet time. It can be speaking on the phone to a trusted friend or having a therapy session with your counsellor. It could be at home listening to your favourite music and relaxing with your favourite cup of coffee. It can be in an office space where no one is around, for you to reflect and think freely. Your safe space can be anything that you want it to be.

My main point is that your ‘safe place’ needs to be a space or a place where you feel grounded, protected, and away from harm. It needs to be a place where you are free from danger, injury, hurt or risk not mentally and emotionally.

What does a ‘safe place’ look like for a male? What and where would you like your ‘safe place’ to be? It’s that place that protects you from self-destruction. Remember the safe place does not need to be a physical location. It can be in the hands of God who truly love and cares for you.

“God is our safe place and our strength. He is always our help when we are in trouble” Psalm 45 vs 1
